Ever wonder where concepts like Yo Gabba Gabba come from? It's simple. They come from Japan.
Watch for the knife below in what is probably one of the least violent Kure Kure Takora episodes ever. The show's creative cartoon violence is only one of the many reasons it has achieved cult-like status among fans of surrealist 1970s Japanese children's television. (It aired from October 1973 to September 1974 in a blistering 260 2:41 episodes.)
This last one was supposedly banned from airing in Japan, although it's hard to understand why. Sure, Takora is beaten within an inch of his life, but there are apparently episodes where he is stabbed with syringes, etc. This surely can't be the worst.
I think my favorite things about this show are the gourd (?) Chomba's hand gestures, and Takora's wild, rarely-connecting "attack mode."
I don’t think that this at all compares to Yo Gabba! My daughter goes absolutely bonkers for YGG - “sings”, dances, smiles, gets very excited. It is definitely the music. Are the creatures bizarre? Absolutely. BUT I don’t think that it’s at all BAD for my daughter - she enjoys watching it and my husband and I think it’s hilarious.
Well, Yo Gabba Gabba is a full variety show, and certainly lacks the violence. I’m thinking most of the style of costumes and the settings they put them in. Both are fascinating to me!
We flagged this post in our “over eight” category, by the way - Z will not be seeing these videos until she is well beyond the “hitting” stage.

Wow...did I go on the defensive about YGG or what? Ha ha ha....
Guess it’s because I have the only beat-boxing 13 month old in the world - she just can’t get enough of Biz’s Beat of the Day on YGG. It just cracks us up.
BUT...back to the original post. Yes, costumes and style are definitely similar. And honestly, I don’t think I’d have ever guessed it came from Japan. I agree about the violence - kind of shocking. Is a show like the one above targeted to toddlers/preschoolers?
